Advancements in Knee OA Treatment: Spotlight on PRP Therapy

Advancements in Knee OA Treatment

In recent years, the field of Orthobiologics has been pioneering the way toward innovative treatments for joint preservation and cartilage regeneration. One treatment that is gaining significant attention is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, especially for managing knee osteoarthritis (OA), a prevalent orthopedic condition. The growing promise of orthobiologic treatments like PRP have naturally fostered a global conversation among medical professionals, aimed at furthering the understanding and development of these cutting-edge therapies.

Dr. Sachdev, M.D., FAAOS, MBA, CHC, a notable figure in the field of Orthobiologics, recently attended the 17th ICRS (International Cartilage Regeneration and Joint Preservation Society) World Congress 2023, held in Sitges, Spain, from September 9-12. Themed “Time for Action: Advancing the Science and Treatments for Cartilage and Joint Preservation,” the congress was a vibrant hub of scientific discussions, panel debates, and exhibitions, all spotlighting the latest developments in cartilage regeneration and joint preservation, including Orthobiologics.

A highlight of the congress was a plenary session presented by ESSKA (European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy) titled “Biologics: ESSKA Consensus on Injectables Orthobiologics – Knee OA?”

The session presented scientific evidence from a large number of participants, involving 75 expert clinicians and scientists from 23 European countries.

The consensus from the evidence was that PRP is a valid treatment option for knee OA and could be considered as a 1st line injectable treatment option.

Moreover, PRP was shown to have clinical superiority over other available injectable treatment options, such as steroids.

How PRP works

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment is utilized for managing osteoarthritis (OA) in the knee by leveraging the body’s self-healing properties. Here’s a succinct outline of how PRP treatment works for knee OA:

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy
  1. Collection: Blood is drawn from the patient.
  2. Separation: The drawn blood is centrifuged to separate the plasma and platelets from the other blood components.
  3. Concentration: The separated plasma, now rich in platelets, is collected. This platelet-rich plasma contains growth factors and proteins that aid in healing.
  4. Injection: The PRP is then injected into the affected knee joint.
  5. Healing Activation: Once injected, the growth factors in the PRP help to accelerate the body’s natural healing process, promoting the repair and regeneration of damaged tissue.
  6. Symptom Relief: Over time, this process can lead to a reduction in pain and improved function of the knee.
