In general, stem cell injections are advised for moderate osteoarthritis in the hip, knee, shoulder, ankle, or thumb, where there is not complete collapse of the joint space. Some medical issues (like lymphoma and leukemia) will preclude you from having the stem cell procedure done.

We most commonly use bone marrow stem cell injections for larger joints, such as knees, hips and shoulders but also treat elbows, ankles, and thumbs. Stem cell treatment is also an option for chronic tendon issues that have been resistant to other treatments. The two most common conditions are tennis elbow and Achilles tendinitis.Stem Cells are also used to treat ligament, muscle and tendon injuries. Currently, we do not treat any neck or spinal conditions with stem cell therapy.

At present, Insurance does not cover the cost of stem cell treatments. The cost of treatment ranges from $3550 to $4450 depending upon the type and number of joints treated, amount of Bone Marrow concentrate needed and complexity of the problem. A firm written estimate will be provided to you at the time of your evaluation. Payment plans are available.

Our experience is that most patients will have significant relief of pain around 1-2 months post injection. They will often continue to improve for the first 3-6 months after the stem cell procedure. Like any procedure, it does not work for every one and some people will not see any significant benefit. This is still a very new treatment, and there have not been a lot of long term outcomes studies or data as yet. However, early results are very encouraging.

Stem cells are harvested from bone marrow which is aspirated from Pelvis bone. These are patient?s own cells and are not to be confused with embryonic stem cells.

No. Combination of sedation (light anesthesia) and local anesthetic ?makes the procedure painless.

Since the procedure uses your own cells, there are no rejection issues.

Since your own cells are extracted and injected back all in one sitting, the procedure does not need FDA approval.

The procedure can be repeated though we have not had to do this as yet.

The entire procedure is done by Dr. Ranjan Sachdev, a board certified Mayo Clinic trained orthopaedic surgeon. Dr. Sachdev has been doing stem cell injections since 2014 and has done more stem cell injections than any other orthopaedic surgeon in Lehigh Valley. He chaired the session and presented a paper on stem cell treatments at the World Congress of Orthopaedics in Xian China in September 2015.

The procedure takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Since light anesthesia is used, most patients can leave shortly after the procedure.
